iPhone 4: 326ppi
The iPhone 4's Retina Display has been matched a couple of times by a couple of niche smartphones, but it is still the best in class. Its 3.5-inch screen has a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels, which amounts to the highest pixel density on a phone, for now. Toshiba is preparing a 4-inch HD screen capable of a resolution of 720x1280 at 367ppi.
Nokia E6: 326ppi
This QWERTY business smartphone has a 2.46-inch 640x480 resolution capacitive touch screen. At 326ppi, its got enough pixels per inch to match Apple's Retina Display, while carrying a midrange price tag. The E6 also has an 8 megapixel camera that's capable of 720p HD playback and recording, and features all the connectivity options you'd expect from a modern day smartphone.
Samsung Jet 2: 301ppi
Announced in 2009, this feature phone won't appeal to anyone but pixel density enthusiasts. It has a 3.1 inch 480x800 pixel AMOLED screen, taking the ppi count over 300. It's interesting to note that the Samsung Wave (S8500), with a 3.3" 480×800 pixel touchscreen has a pixel density of ~282, while its successor, the Wave 3 has a 4-inch 480 x 800 pixel screen, ~233 ppi pixel density.
BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900: 286ppi
The Bold 9900, this year's flagship smartphone for RIM has a 2.8-inch 640x480 resolution touchscreen, a marginal improvement over the previous generation.
Samsung Galaxy Note: 285ppi
Unprecedented in both size and pixel density, this Android smartphone/tablet hybrid has a 5.3 inch 800x1280 pixel Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. The Galaxy Note has a higher resolution screen than most entry-level laptops!
Motorola Atrix: 275ppi
Sporting a 4-inch qHD (960x540) display, the Atrix grabbed the Best Of CES 2011 awards, but hasn't been seen Indian shores yet.
Nokia N900: ~267 ppi
Announced in 2009 and eventually launched in June 2010 in India, this Linux-based phone had 3.5-inch 800×480 resolution resistive screen, which was far superior to the reigning iPhone of that time.
Motorola Defy: 265ppi
The 3.7-inch screen on the Defy is the same 854x480 resolution as the one on the Motorola Milestone. The Upcoming Defy+ will retain the same screen size and resolution.
Motorola PRO+: 258ppi
This upcoming QWERTY Android business phone has a 3.1-inch 640 x 480 pixel TFT capacitive screen. Quite decent, considering most 3.2-inch phones achieve half the resolution of the PRO+.
HTC Sensation: 256ppi
The HTC Sensation impresses in both size and pixel density. Its 4.3-inch qHD(960x540) display is befitting of a phone that firmly stamps its presence in the superphone class.
